One lost in life and heartbreakingly torn by inner contradictions but simple and powerful in style; the other authentic and authentically American, amazingly prolific but most of all the author of his time.  Their work perfectly reflected their world experience; you can’t ask for more than that.   Updike reviewed a biography on Cheever posthumously in this week’s New Yorker.
